Project at Bursledon Brickworks now complete
Conservation repairs to the Grade II* listed brick kilns at The Brickworks Museum in Bursledon have been completed. The original kiln was built in 1896/97 and is an early example of Staffordshire type transverse-arched continuous kiln of twelve chambers, built as two sets of six arranged back-to-back.
The aim of a continuous kiln was to keep it burning all the time, so men would take fine coal dust up to the brick floor over the kiln, where it was then dropped through small holes into the chambers below.
The repair works were grant funded by Historic England, Hampshire County Council and Garfield Weston and involved the replacement of the asbestos roof over the kiln including associated drainage, extensive repairs to the brick floor over the kilns, and a new access ramp to provide public access onto the kiln where the structure can be interpreted.
