Re-roofing of Jane Austen’s House Completes

Following completion of Phase 1 in April 2022 works on Phase Two of Jane Austen’s House Museum are now complete, in time for the 75th anniversary of the museum opening.

Located in Chawton, Hampshire, Jane Austen’s House was home to the author for the last eight years of her life and is where she wrote and published all six of her novels. Phase One of the project was completed in April 2022, and involved a complete reroofing of the Grade I listed main house.

Phase Two has involved a full roof replacement of the Grade II listed outbuildings, using new handmade clay peg tiles. The museum has remained open throughout the works, with visitor flow carefully managed. In addition to reroofing and repairs, replacement rainwater goods will now be better able to cope with increased rainfall, and new bifold doors and internal insulation added to the Cart Shed will allow the space to be used for expanding the shop.
